Shows the progressive nature of God and what He's after.
There are three prayers in this passage of Scripture - not for the world,
but for the church.
The stress is on getting the gospel out to the whole world. The U.S. has
a great need for evangelization at the present time. Missionaries from
other countries have been coming here in the same way that U.S. missionaries
used to go out in past times to other countries.
John 17:20 - that the world may believe
Getting saved is only the beginning. God has a plan beyond salvation.
Why are we here? What does God want out of all of this?
Is. 66:1-2 - We are a place of rest for Him. God will rest in those people
who rest in God. He cannot rest in
a troubled people.
Psalm 132:13-14 - The consummation of Is.66 verses. What God desires,
God gets. God wants a people He can live in forever. Heaven is not the
goal. We exist for God's pleasure.
John 17:22-23 - may be made perfect
Salvation is like raw building material for God's house. Then what do
we do with that material?
Glorification - may be made perfect - a maturing process in us. Drawing
near to the Lord causes rapid maturation.
II Thess. 1:10 - He has come to be glorified in his saints. Jesus will
be glorified in us.
We cannot save the world without becoming lights. This is what draws people.
We are to become like him.
The progression: Saved from darkness
Brought into light
Become light like a "perfect day."
To satisfy God's heart we must become a habitation of God.
John 17:24 - be with him where He is to behold His glory
This is NOW, not at some future time. His purpose is to show us off.
He desires to give us revelation of Him. We cannot just have a knowledge
of the Word (Scripture), but we must have an intimate knowledge of Jesus,
who is the Word.
God wants Jesus to be the firstborn of many who are just like him.
We must draw near to God. This is our only hope and should be the only
desire of our heart -- to apprehend as much of God as possible. We should
tell him that we want him now -- to see him as he is now -- come up to
him now. We should seek to find him in the realm of the Spirit. A balance
between the Word and the Spirit is vital.
Too many people focus on Jesus the man -- Jesus as he was. We need to
desire him as he is NOW.
II Cor. 3 - contrasts the glory of the Old Testament with the New Testament
glory that we should have now. We should have more than Moses -- and he
had so much glory that he had to cover his face!
You can only truly learn God by revelation. Books can challenge you, but
you learn God by revelation from Him.
Jesus is glorified in the realm of the Spirit in a high place. Now that
he has been exalted he has all power. He wants us to know him as he is
now. As he is now, so are we.
We should want and desire God more than anything. When you want God, then
you want what God wants. He wants us to be transformed. The Holy Spirit
must take over. (Many references to the phrase "in the Spirit.")
We are approaching God's eternal purpose.
Romans 1 - I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ
The righteousness of God revealed
Hebrews 2:4 - live by his faith.
These passages correlate faith with the apprehension of God. Faith which
operates by almighty love is paramount.
I Cor. 4:1-2 - We are entrusted with the secret things of God. We must
prove faithful. Find your ministry and do it. We must move as a body into
each individual gift/ministry. Take heed that we fulfill what God has
called us to do. As the gift/ministry matures, our desire will more and
more be to please only Him. We are set aside by the Lord.
II Cor. 12:4-6 - We are ministers to do what the Lord wants -- to do what
he calls us to. We are to fulfill his calling.
Ephesians 4 - Be taught by Christ. This contrasts where we were (in darkness)
with where we are when first-saved babes in the Lord.
I Cor. 2:6 - Be fed on Christ. Contrasts new babes with where we're headed.
This is the impartation of the Son of God himself by the Spirit. It's
wrapped up in faith. Stop depending on feelings. You please God by faith.
I John 2:20 - you have an unction from the Holy One and know all things.
What you have you don't have to pray for. Why doesn't it work when we
pray? Lack of faith.
Jude 20 - How do we get that faith? Pray in the Spirit. This edifies the
individual. Be delivered from the world. There is a release of the Holy
Spirit when we pray in the Spirit. We have the potential in us to have
living waters flow. Don't underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit and
being filled with it. All the power of heaven is at our command in the
will of God. We seek power and confuse that with the anointing. The Spirit
is the abiding anointing. The Spirit teaches us. It is waiting to be released
Everything but Christ is dung.
Titus 3:4-6 - This is how God operates. The key to drawing near to God
is in the person of Christ and drawing close to him. He will reveal God
- his purpose and desire.
John 14:13-14 - And whatsoever ye ask in my name, that will I do, that
the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my
name, I will do it.
John 16:21-26 - A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her
hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth
no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye
now therefore have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall
rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. And in that day ye shall
ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say until you, Whatsoever ye shall ask
the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Hitherto have ye asked
nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
These things have I spoken to you in proverbs; but the time cometh when
I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly
of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not unto
you that I will pray the Father for you ..."
John 14 verses are for the glorification of the Father in the Son. John
16 versus - we are just about here. The woman is the church. We'll not
ask Jesus -- we'll ask the Father. This leads us from Jesus as human to
Jesus as Lord -- Jesus as deity.
Jesus presents us to the Father -- and has begun to present the Father
