Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans
Evil. Most often when we think of evil we think of Satan and his obvious
workers: Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot, Edi Amin, Saddam Hussein, etc. Or we
think of something like the Oklahoma bombing, or the school shootings
that have affected us all. These are all evil men and evil acts, but most
of us are not in a position to overcome this evil with good.
However there is an evil that affects us each and every day, a kind of
evil that we have been given the power to overcomethe evil that
is perpetuated upon disciples of Jesus by so called brothers
and sisters. Jesus warned us of this:
Remember the word that I said to you, A slave is not greater
than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute
you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. John 15:20
This type of evil is part of our lot in this world. If you will not settle
for religion, but instead become followers of Jesus, you will be persecuted.
And indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
2 Timothy 3:12
Much of this comes at the hands and mouths of so called believers.
This is not unusual. Jesus was persecuted by the religionists of His day.
When reviled, He did not revile in return. When slandered, He did not
slander in return. When lied about, He did not lie in return. In all these,
He overcame evil with good. He blessed and did not curse. He spoke the
Truth in love. He fed the poor, He healed the afflicted, He offered comfort
to the downtrodden. We must do the same if we are to become normal Christians
as depicted in the New Testament.
We need the Grace of God to live His Way. In fact, He has offered us an
even greater grace that will continuously empower us to overcome evil
But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, God is opposed
to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Submit therefore to
God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and
He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify
your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:6-8
Do you want this greater grace to overcome evil? Its free! Its
simple! And it will cost you your whole life. Submit, Resist, Draw Near,
Cleanse, and Purify. He has offered us all we need to fulfill His purpose
in us and through us. Do your part and He will do His!
